Women's League Cup: Manchester City hammer Bristol City to reach semi-final, wins for Chelsea and West Ham

Holders Manchester City are into the semi-final of the Women’s League Cup following an emphatic 6-0 victory over Bristol City.

There were also wins for Chelsea and West Ham on a night where three of the final four were decided.

At Ashton Gate, thoughts of a potential upset were swiftly put to bed when Hayley Raso got on the end of Alex Greenwood’s deep cross to open the scoring for City on eight minutes.

Raso added her second shortly after finishing off a lovely, sweeping team move.

On the half-hour mark, it was three when Khadija Shaw found her way between two defenders to head home from Lauren Hemp’s cross.

Five minutes later, Hemp herself got in on the act, coolly finishing with her left foot after a slaloming solo run from the right-hand side.

Mary Fowler made it five before the break after getting on the end of another Hemp pass.

Hemp wasn’t finished for the evening however and scored City’s sixth, and her second, after latching onto a Shaw pass 15 minutes after the restart.

At Brisbane Road, all eyes were on Bethany England as she lined up for Tottenham against former side Chelsea.

However, the Blues refused to be swept up in any sentimentality surrounding the club legend and took the lead on 38 minutes, although there was confusion about the identity of the scorer as Erin Cuthbert’s drive and shot looked to take a nick off team-mate Sam Kerr before hitting the back of the net.

Fran Kirby doubled their advantage on 68 minutes before Kerr allowed no debate about her claim to the third goal as she dinked over Spurs keeper Tinja-Riikka Korpela to put the result beyond doubt.

Drew Spence got one back for Spurs in injury time but it was to no avail.

Liverpool and West Ham couldn’t be separated for much of their tie at Prenton Park but the Hammers snatched a winner with just two minutes to play when Dagny Brynjarsdottir leapt highest to head home Viviane Asseyi’s deep cross.
