The Last of Us star Melanie Lynskey reveals that her husband cameoed as a clicker. The New Zealand actress, also known for her role in Yellowjackets, debuted in episode 4 as Kathleen, an original character not from the games who is the ruthless leader of a revolutionary movement in Kansas City and is hunting Henry. At the end of episode 5, Joel, Ellie, Henry, and Sam are pinned down by Kathleen and her militia, though they are saved by an infected horde that emerges from underground, including a Bloater and a clicker that mauls Kathleen.
Among this horde of infected in The Last of Us episode 5 was a clicker played by the Kathleen actor’s real-life husband, Jason Ritter, as Lynskey recently revealed during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Lynskey talked about how her husband trained with the show’s stunt team and went through the makeup process to cameo as a clicker. She also says she got to shoot her husband once during the scene. Read what Lynskey said or watch the relevant portion of the interview below (starting at 4:02):
“He’s in episode five, yeah. He was a stunt person. He trained with the stunt people, and he just did all these amazing stunts. It’s, like, his lifelong dream. He got put in the makeup, and he came out of the ground and was falling over and doing all these – I shot him once.”
The Last of Us Is Chock-Full of Cameos
Melanie Lynskey’s husband is just the latest celebrity cameo that has been uncovered in The Last of Us. Other than being Lynskey’s real-life husband, Jason Ritter is the son of the late comedian John Ritter and an accomplished actor in his own right, known for his roles in TV shows like Joan of Arcadia, The Class, The Event, Gravity Falls, and Raising Dion. He also received an Emmy nomination for guest starring on Parenthood. Many of The Last of Us‘ other cameos are actors from the original game, including Kathleen’s second-in-command Perry, played by original Tommy actor Jeffrey Pierce.
The Last of Us episode 8 featured a cameo from original Joel actor Troy Baker, who played David’s right-hand man James, and the following week’s episode saw the original Ellie actor Ashley Johnson making a cameo as Anna, Ellie’s mother. This wasn’t the only cameo from The Last of Us season 1 finale, as the episode also featured a secret cameo from Laura Bailey, who played Abby in the game, a crucial character yet to be introduced in the show. With The Last of Us season 2 renewed by HBO, the show hopefully continues its tradition of exciting cameos.
