After season 1 followed Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) through their adventures across the country, the two returned to their settlement in Jackson. After Joel lies to Ellie about the Fireflies, it remains to be seen how their relationship will shape out in the future.
While the game features a time jump of five years that sees Ellie age from a teenager to a young adult, that won’t be the case in The Last of Us season 2. In an interview with Collider, co-creator Craig Mazin explained that there will be no recasting. The primary shift in time will likely be occurring gradually, unlike what happened in the game. Check out his quote below:
“I don’t want to pin anything down. Obviously, the time jump is important, to some extent. It reflects the changing nature of Ellie’s relationship with Joel, as she gets older. In the game, as you point out, she goes from 14 to 19, I believe. But no, we are not doing House of the Dragon leaps. Those were very significant leaps in age, and we don’t have that. So, no recasting will occur. Not on my watch. Of course, in the second game, there’s a primary shift in time, but there are also moments that you see, that are in between the events of the main storyline of The Last of Us Part II and the storyline of The Last of Us Part I.”
What Will The Last Of Us Season 2 Look Like?
If The Last of Us season 2 follows the game, it will be a dark story. While the showrunners have already agreed that the story is too large to fit one season, the first half alone is incredibly tragic. Ellie is left on a quest for vengeance that sees her delve into darkness as the world continues to collapse around her.
With Ellie traveling to new locations and facing off against new threats, The Last of Us season 2 will explore the infected to a much greater extent. They may have played a minuscule role in season 1, but future seasons will make them essential figures now that the showrunners are fully aware of what they look like on-screen. Ellie’s immunity will also continue to play a role in her story, though the Fireflies are likely defunct.
While there are many instances that occur between The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II that the game depicts as flashbacks, The Last of Us season 2 will likely have them occur as a part of the standard chronological timeline. The showrunners have already promised to be faithful to the game, much like season 1 is. While there is no way to know when the next season will air, it is likely to release in late 2024 or even 2025.
