How I Met Your Father season 2 star Hilary Duff teases that a legacy character from How I Met Your Mother is set to make a cameo appearance.
Hilary Duff teased that an original How I Met Your Mother character will appear on How I Met Your Father season 2. In the new spin-off, Kim Cattrall’s Sophie, in the year 2050, recounts to her son the story of how she met his father in 2022. Duff plays Sophie in the present day, with Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, Tom Ainsley, and Tien Tran appearing as her close group of friends in Manhattan. Despite mixed reviews, How I Met Your Father proved to be popular among audiences on its streaming service Hulu, warranting a super-sized 20-episode season 2 that is due to premiere on January 24.
Now, in a new interview with Good Morning America, Duff has teased that a legacy How I Met Your Mother character will appear on How I Met Your Father season 2.
Duff is holding back from revealing the identity of the guest star, but she acknowledges that she had her wish granted working with the actor. She also added that she eventually hopes to have the entire OG HIMYM cast appear on HIMYF. Read what Duff said below:
I think I might lose my job if I told you who, but we do have a special guest from the original cast coming this season. It was a dream come true working with them. I think our dream would have the entire cast come through at some point.
Who Could HIMYF Season 2’s Secret HIMYM Guest Be?
This would not be the first time that How I Met Your Father would feature a legacy character from How I Met Your Mother. Previously, after appearances from Kyle MacLachlan as The Captain and Laura Bell Bundy as Becky, the spin-off delivered a surprise during its season 1 finale when Cobie Smulders appeared on HIMYF reprising her role as Robin Scherbatsky, who gives advice to Sophie after her fallout with Jesse. Smulders’ cameo was celebrated as it not only strengthened the connections between the original and the new show but also delivered some precious nostalgia without compromising the spin-off’s own standing.
Smulders’ appearance has paved the way for more OG characters to appear on How I Met Your Father, although the show needs to be wise with its choice of the legacy character to ensure that the cameo doesn’t overshadow the appeal of the present cast. Recently, Josh Radnor expressed interest in reprising his role as Ted Mosby on How I Met Your Father, even mentioning that he has been exchanging emails with Duff and “wouldn’t turn down an invitation” to return. However, considering Radnor’s Ted was the POV character in the original show, it would be too early for him to appear in a spin-off that is still trying to find its voice. A cameo later down the road would work far better in his case, as opposed to a season 2 appearance that doesn’t exactly serve the story and takes the spotlight away from the new characters.
Of course, considering the fan-favorite he is, Neil Patrick Harris’ Barney Stinson is one a major cameo many are calling to appear on How I Met Your Father season 2. But Harris has already voiced his skepticism, suggesting that Barney shouldn’t appear on the show as his misogynistic antics wouldn’t work on TV today. Harris’ How I Met Your Father reservations are valid, and if the show instead opts to include a redeemed version of his character, it could be a hit-or-miss among viewers. That said, at the point where How I Met Your Father is currently, it can really benefit from appearances from Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel as Lily and Marshall Eriksen. As original supporting characters, the duo wouldn’t too heavily influence the offshoot’s narrative direction, but at the same time, it will be interesting for fans to catch up with them after all these years, strengthening the tie-ins between the shows.
