The president of Sony Pictures Television Studios gives an update on what’s next for Cobra Kai after season 6. It was recently announced that Netflix’s dojo drama series would come to a close after its upcoming sixth installment, ensuring that the popular Karate Kid continuation would end on its own terms and get a chance to provide a sense of finality to its long-running stories. This was speculated to be the case even before the news was officially announced, as Netflix unusually took its time to confirm the renewal and the cast had been hinting that the finish line was in sight.

In an interview with Deadline, Katherine Pope — the president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, which is behind Cobra Kai — was asked about what’s next for the show. Pope affirmed that the creators were interested in expanding the universe, clarifying the separation between the Netflix series and the upcoming Karate Kid movie. In the response, which is included below, Pope sounds optimistic about what’s next for Cobra Kai:

They have some ideas in terms of expanding Cobra Kai and coming at the Karate Kid legacy in different ways. But yes, the movie is a good example too. It’s all of these. I think we’ve all learned these worlds can exist together and they can feel cohesive and they can feel additive, especially for the fans, and feel like big, big worlds that exist on lots of different levels, they don’t necessarily all exist in the same plane.

What Could A Cobra Kai Spinoff Look Like?

When asked about which of his Cobra Kai castmates would be good to see in a spinoff, Ralph Macchio gave an interesting response. The actor, who plays the lead Daniel LaRusso, makes sure to stress that all his co-stars are capable, explaining that the hypothetical continuation would have more to do with which genre the potential spinoff would belong to. But, as an example, Macchio mentions a potential Hawk and Demetri spinoff, and he’s not the first. Gianni DeCenzo, who plays Demetri, has said he’d be open to continuing his character’s friendship with Hawk (Jacob Bertrand).

DeCenzo talked about how the story could include Demetri and Hawk going off to college in the future, elaborating that the two buddies could essentially take on the role of detectives. Hawk would play the “bad cop,” with Demetri taking the opposite end. While it’s undoubtedly a tongue-in-cheek response, it does get to the truth of how Cobra Kai has thrived based on the strength of its relationships. This was a fact that was also mentioned by Macchio, who said he enjoyed the scenes between Daniel and his daughter Samantha (Mary Mouser).

It’s more likely, though, that a Cobra Kai spinoff would take what has already worked and expand on it. Perhaps there would be tournaments and new feuds in a college setting. Or it could zero in on another character from the movies. Right now, the focus is likely on ending the series on a positive note. But down the line, it does sound like everyone from the creators to the cast and executives want to remain in the world they helped to revive.
